The Honourable Marlene Jennings

The speaker for Black History Month will be The Honourable Marlene Jennings, former lawyer, Liberal MP, Parliamentary Secretary and community advocate. Ms. Jennings was the first black woman from Quebec to be elected to Parliament.

Holiday Party

The MCW Holiday Party was well-attended at capacity with 50 members and guests. Some members shared stories about how this time of year is celebrated and described their traditions. There was a collection of non-perishable items which were donated to a local charity.

Nakuset, Executive Director of the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, spoke about the support and services offered to First Nations, Inuit and Métis women and children. They have facilities to house 16 women and children per night and are working on increasing this by another 30 places.

MCW is pleased to honour Margaret Trudeau, mental health advocate, for her efforts in mental health-issues education and bringing attention to the stigma associated with the disease by naming her the MCW Woman of the Year 2018.

150th Anniversary celebration of Canada

Quilt of belonging

Quilt of Belonging

A wonderful evening was spent celebrating some of the women in Canada's history and also celebrating the Quilt of belonging with its contribution from 263 cultural communities which make up the fabric of today's Canada. The 120-foot long Quilt is housed in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec and also goes on tour across Canada.

At the MCW Round Table Discussion, two candidates, Alexandra Mendès (Liberal) and Anne Lagacé Dowson (NDP) spoke to the membership about their political beliefs, the platforms of their parties and their priorities on the following themes: Women's Economic Equality and Security, Women's Health, and Gender Equality. In addition, there was a brief discussion on the future of Status of Women Canada including its funding, provision of services and advocacy. The Conservative candidate was unable to attend.

Hannah Taylor

Hannah Taylor shared her moving and inspiring story about her experience helping the homeless starting at the tender age of 5 years. By the time she was 8 years old she had started the Ladybug Foundation to help the homeless. Hannah, now 19 years old, has been named one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada and the Foundation has raised more than 4 million dollars. She was also inspirational in starting the National Red Scarf Day, January 31, a day to show support for Canadian hunger and homelessness.
